LIMITED EDITIONS

Although limited editions are popular with collectors, since limiting the number of pieces produced increases their value, I make them for two other, personal reasons. First, it is satisfying to close a project, to limit its duration, and minimize the repetitive aspects of printmaking. Secondly, it is always challenging to anticipate the next project, as the process of making art is a pleasure unto itself.

DRAWINGS

All my work begins as drawing. Most drawings are un-sellable, useful only to me as a stage in the process. I like traditional media (pencils, pens, and markers) but I have begun to be somewhat comfortable drawing with an electronic stylus.

DIGITAL IMAGES

Most of these images are derived from sketches or drawings or even lino block prints that I have scanned into a drawing program and then worked up over time. Since the printing is mechanical, I can keep the prices very low by producing the work in large editions of one thousand.

SERIGRAPHS

This work is carefully planned from plans and drawings, and is typically made from four hand cut stencils. Each stencil is adhered to a synthetic fabric stretched on a frame and printed with the darker area color printed first, and then successively overprinted with lighter, often transparent inks. I print the black line stencil last. Mis-registered or smudged prints are discarded. Editions are small, usually running between twenty and forty copies. It can take weeks to cut a complicated stencil.

QUESTIONS

My "images of thoughts" are a joy to produce. If any raise questions, feel free to post me an e-mail.
